Baubles

When beginning the long process of creating these baubles, I began with my reference photos. I knew as soon as I had created the print on the right that I wanted to put it onto something else. I believed that it would look beautiful on baubles, if I could pull it off.

My process followed the exact same process that I did for the print, as I had never painted on a bauble before and decided that was the best way to create these.

So, I began the very long process by mapping out the basic triangular shapes of the trees on all the baubles, and giving the baubles a light orange wash. I did a second layer to ensure it would cover the baubles and make a good base of the blues to settle.
After this wash was dry, I began with the basic layers of paint. I blocked in all of the tree shapes with a deep brown, and mixed both a light and medium blue for the sky and floor. I did 2-3 layers of each until I couldn't see the orange anymore and the layers were smooth and clear.

I then, after the paint had dried, began with painting the trees. Starting with the dark blue, I created blob like effects on the far right side of the trees, as the show the light coming from the left. I made sure to be very careful on placement, and the sizes of the blobs and the trees move farther into the background. The farther away and smaller the tree, the smaller the blobs. I then, very lightly went over the edges f the floor, to create shadow on the snow from the trees. Letting the paint dry, I then went in with a medium blue, only difference being I moved these marks to the middle on the trees and I made sure some of the darker parts are paired with medium to show a gradient. I then did the same with the lightest blue shade, moving it to the far left and overlapping some of the medium shades to create a gradient effect. With this shade I was more careful on where it would be placed, as I had to consider the lighting and where the light would hit each tree.

Once this was all dry, I finished off with an off white and overlapped the lightest blue shades to create the snow, and added this to the floor also to show the light peaking through the cracks, along with the darkest shade to balance the floor out. After all of this was dry, I varnished/glossed over everything to keep the paint safe and let it dry overnight.

Overall, I'm really proud of myself for pushing myself way out of my comfort zone and trying something totally new. I think this design came out beautifully and really works nicely on a bauble, which will hopefully sell well in the fair. I would develop this further by being a bit more considerate of lighting for all over the bauble, as I could interlink the two sides rather then having the same thing on both sides.
